Monthly Update
JULY 2024
FROM YOUR MISSION STRATEGIST
As Americans we are very familiar with the Declaration of Independence which “birthed” our nation on July 4, 1776. Today, each 4th of July is marked by celebrations, picnics, and fireworks. These celebrations are no accident. John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail this letter regarding the Declaration:
“[This day]...will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”

To this day, we pause to celebrate the freedoms we have. But may we never be so independent that we forget to rely on one another. The purpose of the Declaration was to, yes, declare our independence, but also our unity, our togetherness, our reliance on one another. This is not merely true as fellow citizens of this nation, but also as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Acts 4:32 says that the first gathering of Christ-followers after Jesus’ ascension, “... were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.” This does not mean that they always agreed on everything. I’m sure they had differing opinions about many things. But what they were together on was their “love for one another” that declared to the world that they belonged to Christ (John 13:35).
May our prayer be, this 4th of July, that as we celebrate our independence as an earthly nation, we also celebrate our dependence on each other as the Body of Christ.
Gratefully yours, Brian

The Greenup Baptist Association exists as a fellowship of cooperating churches whose purpose is to assist each of its member churches in extending God’s Kingdom on earth by winning the lost, developing believers, and strengthening missions.
